If you’re comparing Surfer SEO vs Clearscope, you’re past the “do I need a content optimization tool?” stage. You’re shopping, and you want to know which one deserves your money. I run an agency, so I’ve thought about this choice a lot. A tool has to save real hours, or it doesn’t stay in my stack.

I use Surfer every day. My agency writes new content for a long list of client sites each week, and Surfer is part of how we build home pages, service pages, product pages and blog posts. It takes the guesswork out of what a page needs: it connects to Google Search Console, looks at the pages ranking right now, and scores our headings and copy as we write. The same process works if you’re only writing for your own business.

Here’s the short version. Both tools look at what’s ranking for your keyword and tell you what your page is missing. Both now track whether AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini mention your brand. The big differences are price, how they charge (Surfer limits seats and documents, Clearscope gives unlimited users but caps tracked queries and pages), and how much AI writing help you get.

For most small businesses and agencies, I think Surfer gives you more for the money. Clearscope makes more sense for larger content teams with lots of writers and editors. Below I’ll break down why, using each vendor’s current pricing pages. For a deeper look at Surfer on its own, see my full Surfer SEO review.

Surfer SEO vs Clearscope: Quick Verdict

  • Pick Surfer SEO if you’re a small business owner, freelancer or agency that wants optimization, AI drafting help and internal linking in one tool, starting at $49/mo billed yearly (AI visibility tracking starts on Standard at $99/mo).
  • Pick Clearscope if you run a content team with many writers, editors or freelancers who all need access, and you’re fine paying $129/mo or more for a simple, focused tool with unlimited users.

What Surfer SEO and Clearscope Actually Do

Before getting into price, it helps to be clear on the job these tools do. You give them a target keyword. They study the pages that already rank, then score your draft on how well it covers the topics, terms and questions searchers expect. You write (or edit) until the score is where you want it.

In 2026 both tools have also moved into what people call AI search optimization, sometimes called GEO or AEO. That means tracking whether AI answers mention your brand, not just where you rank in Google. Google itself says its AI features, like AI Overviews, follow the same basic SEO best practices as regular search. Its guide to AI features and your website is worth a read. In other words, these tools help you build complete, useful pages. They are not a shortcut around Google’s helpful, people-first content guidelines.

Surfer SEO vs Clearscope Pricing (2026)

Pricing is where these two split the most. I checked both on their official pricing pages on October 27, 2026: Surfer’s pricing page and Clearscope’s pricing page. All prices are in USD.

Surfer SEO pricing

Surfer shows its prices billed yearly, along with how much you save compared to paying monthly. I’ve worked out the monthly-billing figure from that listed saving. Surfer’s own pricing FAQ says the annual plan saves up to 17%.

Surfer planBilled yearlyBilled monthly (calculated)What you get
Discovery$49/moAbout $59/mo (Surfer lists a $120/yr saving)120 documents, track 10 pages, AI guidelines, Surfy AI assistant and Humanizer, 1 seat

Surfer’s free trial: per Surfer’s help center, new accounts get 7 days of Pro-plan access. You pick a plan and enter a card at checkout, and the trial turns into a paid plan unless you cancel before day 7. Surfer’s help center says the card is charged for the plan’s first billing period, so if you choose yearly billing at checkout, you pay for the whole year on day 7. Note too that on annual plans, Surfer says your credits reset yearly, not monthly.

Clearscope pricing

Clearscope planPriceWhat you get
Essentials$129/mo50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 Discoveries/mo, 20 Drafts/mo, unlimited users and projects
Business$399/mo300 tracked queries, 300 pages, 50 Discoveries/mo, 20 Drafts/mo, dedicated account manager, unlimited users

Clearscope’s pricing page promises a 14-day free trial, no contracts and the option to cancel monthly plans anytime. It also sells add-ons: more pages from $25/mo on Essentials ($15/mo on Business) and more drafts from $50 on Essentials ($20 on Business). The page doesn’t say which bundle size those starting prices buy, so check before you add any. What I couldn’t verify: the page doesn’t list a yearly-billing discount for Essentials or Business. It only says custom yearly plans can be invoiced, so ask Clearscope directly if annual pricing matters to you.

The takeaway: Clearscope’s entry plan costs about 2.6 times as much as Surfer Discovery billed yearly ($129 vs $49). Clearscope makes up for it with unlimited users. If you’re a team of one to three people, that perk is worth very little. If you have fifteen freelance writers who each need a login, it can matter a lot.

Features Compared

Content editor and optimization guidelines

This is the core of both tools. Surfer’s Content Editor gives you a live Content Score plus term, heading and structure suggestions while you write. Clearscope grades your draft for topic coverage in real time and gives term recommendations and a content score as you go. Both do this job well. Clearscope is known for keeping its editor simple and readable. Surfer packs in more controls and more automation. Which one feels better depends on whether you like a clean screen or more levers to pull.

AI writing help

Surfer leans harder into AI. Every plan includes Surfy (its AI SEO assistant) and an AI detector and Humanizer. Standard and up add plagiarism checks and 1-click content optimization, and Pro adds custom voices and templates. Clearscope has a Write feature and includes a set number of monthly “Drafts” on each plan (20 on both Essentials and Business). If you want AI to do more of the first draft and the optimization pass, Surfer gives you more of that on its cheaper plans.

AI search visibility (GEO)

Both vendors now pitch AI visibility as a headline feature. Clearscope includes Query Tracking for ChatGPT and Gemini on every plan, plus brand visibility tracking and what it calls “query fan-out” data, meaning the web searches AI tools run to build their answers.

Surfer includes AI visibility tracking from the Standard plan up, but the coverage differs by plan. Standard tracks 25 prompts weekly in ChatGPT only. Pro (50 prompts daily), Peace of Mind (100 daily) and the tracking-only AI Search Analytics plan (50 daily) track ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini. So if you need more than ChatGPT, Surfer’s real comparison point against Clearscope is Pro or AI Search Analytics, not Standard. Note that Surfer’s cheapest plan, Discovery, doesn’t list AI prompt tracking.

Internal linking and content audits

Both tools help with internal links. Surfer offers 1-click internal linking, and Clearscope surfaces link opportunities from your connected content as you write. For keeping old posts fresh, Surfer has Content Audit and rank-drop detection (Standard and up), and Clearscope’s Protect feature monitors content and sends alerts. If you’re refreshing older posts, which is one of the cheapest ways to win traffic back, both have you covered.

Integrations and workflow

Clearscope says it works with Google Docs, Microsoft Word and WordPress. Surfer also works with Google Docs and WordPress (I cover the details in my review) and adds an API on the Peace of Mind plan, plus MCP access for connecting AI agents on Pro and up. For most small teams, either tool will fit into a Google Docs and WordPress workflow without trouble.

Team features

This is where Clearscope plays to its strengths. Every plan has unlimited users and projects, so adding a new writer costs nothing. Surfer limits seats by plan: 1 on Discovery, 3 on Standard, 5 on Pro and 10 on Peace of Mind. For a solo owner or a small agency, Surfer’s seat limits won’t matter. For a big editorial team, they might push you into a higher Surfer tier.

Which Should You Choose?

Here’s how I’d decide, based on who you are:

  • Solo business owner publishing a few posts a month: Surfer SEO Discovery. At $49/mo billed yearly, it’s the cheapest way to get proper optimization guidelines from either vendor.
  • Small business or small agency that also cares about AI search: Surfer Standard. You get 360 documents, 50 tracked pages, AI visibility tracking (25 prompts, ChatGPT only) and 1-click optimization for $99/mo billed yearly, still below Clearscope’s entry price. If you need Gemini or other AI engines tracked, look at Pro or Clearscope instead.
  • Agency managing several client brands: Surfer Pro, for the 5 brand spaces, 200 tracked pages, daily AI prompt tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini, and internal linking automation.
  • Content team with lots of writers, editors or freelancers: Clearscope. Unlimited users means you’re not paying per seat, and the simple editor is easy to hand to new writers.
  • You only care about AI visibility tracking, not writing: compare Surfer’s AI Search Analytics plan ($82/mo billed yearly) with Clearscope Essentials ($129/mo), and look at which AI engines each one tracks.
  • Neither fits your budget: see my list of cheaper Surfer SEO alternatives.

My honest pick for most of the people who read this site, meaning business owners who handle their own marketing or run a small team, is Surfer. The price gap is too big to ignore unless you truly need unlimited seats. The smart move is to use the trials on real work. Run two or three real posts through each tool and see which guidance you’d actually follow. Set a reminder before Surfer’s trial hits day 7 so you decide on purpose.

How I’d Test Them Side by Side

If you want to make the call with your own content instead of someone else’s opinion, here’s a simple process that fits inside both free trials:

  1. Pick two existing posts that rank on page 2 or 3 in Google Search Console. Those are usually the fastest wins.
  2. Run the same target keyword for each post through both tools.
  3. Compare the suggestions. Do they match what searchers actually want, or are they just a list of words to cram in?
  4. Time yourself on the edit. The tool that gets you to a better page faster is the one that pays for itself.
  5. Pick one, update the post, and request re-indexing in Search Console only after a meaningful update.
  6. Check rankings and clicks over the next few weeks before deciding on a yearly plan.

That last step matters. Saving 17% on a yearly plan is nice, but only after you know the tool fits how you work.
